5 Inspiring Thoughts for Newly Divorced Parents

Getting through a divorce is no easy task. You may think that the process is never ending or that you will never feel “OK” again. This simply isn’t true. You can work through your divorce and come out the other side as a stronger individual and a better parent. It will take some time to rearrange your life, but you can do this! The following quotes may be able to help you through this challenging time.

  1.     “I think it’s important to realize that you can miss something, but not want it back.” – Paulo Coelho

Your life will change after you go through a divorce; there is no question about that. You may yearn for your old life in some respects, but you may also celebrate this new chapter of your life. It is okay to miss your former spouse and everything that he or she represents from time to time, but it is important to recognize the reasons you went through the divorce process.

Share this thought with your children. Let them know that it is okay to miss their old life, but point out how much better their lives are now without the confrontation or other troubles that plagued your family before the divorce.

  1.     “Suffering for your kid’s sake is like trying to hurt someone happy. Take responsibility for your own happiness as a gift to your children.” – Brooke Castillo

Your children watch everything you do. They see when you are not happy; they see when you are suffering. Don’t let your children think unhappy and unhealthy relationships are really “normal.” Your children deserve a parent who is completely present for them.

  1.     “There is a difference between giving up and knowing when you’ve had enough.” – Unknown

Wanting a divorce does not mean that you have given up on your marriage. In most situations, couples have tried unsuccessfully to work out their issues for some time before they consider divorce. Trying to make something work that just will not is exhausting. There is no shame in realizing when you have had enough.

  1.     “When you come out of the storm you won’t be the same person that walked in. That’s what the storm is all about.” – Haruki Murakami

Going through your divorce changes many things about your life. Many people are surprised with how much they change in the process as well. Take up a new hobby, try things you have always thought about trying. Keep in mind that your children may change as well. Spend time together to develop and get to know the new “you.” This is your time to work on you and your family.

  1.     “Never wrestle with pigs. You both get dirty and the pig likes it.” – George Bernard Shaw

Dealing with confrontational spouses can be extremely difficult, in addition to being emotionally and physically draining. However, even when your spouse tries backhanded or sneaky tricks before, during, or after your divorce, you should not stoop to that level. You are better than that, and you should set an example for your children in these types of situations.
